Most people in India do not type pure Hindi or pure English — they type Hinglish: Hindi words in Roman letters, mixed freely with English. "Kal meeting hai, thoda tension hai." Desi Avtar’s characters understand that and reply in kind. Here is how it works, and a few tips to get the best out of it.

There is no Hinglish mode to switch on. The character reads what you write and answers in the same register: Hinglish gets Hinglish, Devanagari Hindi gets Hindi, English gets English. Switch in the middle of a conversation and the character follows.
One detail makes chats feel particularly desi: when characters describe their own actions between asterisks, those actions are written in Hinglish too — *sharma kar muskurati hai* rather than a translated "smiles shyly".
Just write the way you normally would. For example:
Mere se Hinglish me baat karo.— Asks the character to stick to Hinglish.
Mujhe ek dost chahiye jisse main Hindi me chat kar saku.— A good first line with a friend character.
Yaar aaj boss ne phir se weekend pe kaam de diya.— Everyday venting.
Mujhe yeh concept simple language mein samjhao.— Works with the teacher characters.
Ab thoda English mein bolo.— Switching mid-chat.
Hinglish has no fixed spelling — "kya", "kyaa" and "kia" all mean the same thing, and the AI usually understands all of them. Write naturally.
A few Roman Hindi words look like English words or like each other. "Main" can be "I" or "main"; "hai" and "hi" can blur. A little context in the sentence clears it up.
For a poem, a name or anything where the exact word matters, typing in Devanagari removes the guesswork. Characters handle both scripts.
If a reply comes back in more English than you like, just ask — "Hindi mein bolo" — and the character adjusts.
| Best for | Keep in mind | |
|---|---|---|
| Hinglish (Roman script) | Everyday chat, banter, texting-style conversation | Short words can be ambiguous; add context |
| Hindi (Devanagari) | Poems, names, formal or emotional moments | Slower to type on most phone keyboards |
| English | Technical topics, or practising English with a teacher | Characters still keep their desi personality |
Most people mix all three without thinking about it, and that is fine — the character keeps up. The one habit worth forming is asking directly when you want something specific: "sirf Hindi mein jawab do" or "reply in English please" works better than hoping the character will guess.
Nearly every character on Desi Avtar is written to speak Hinglish. These are a good start; more are listed on the Hindi AI chat hub and in the Indian AI characters directory.
