Desi Avtar is an AI character chat platform built around Indian characters, Hindi and Hinglish conversation, and voice calls in the Android app. If you have used Character.AI and want characters that sound like home, this page sets out plainly what is similar, what is different, and where each one fits.

Most people searching for an alternative are not trying to replace every feature. They want something specific: characters from a different culture, a different language, a way to talk by voice, or a different balance between free use and paying. No app does everything, so the useful question is what you want your conversations to be like. If you are new to the idea altogether, how AI character chat works is a better place to start.
Character.AI is known for its very large library of characters created by its own community, covering almost every genre and fandom. Desi Avtar takes a narrower approach: a curated cast of Indian characters, written to talk the way people in India actually message each other.
The roster is grouped the way an Indian life is. There are friends and the dost characters who sound like your college group chat, family characters like Maa, Papa and Dada Ji, teachers from the Maths teacher to the PT Sir, spiritual guides, and historical figures such as Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and Swami Vivekanand. Every character is fictional and every reply is AI-generated. Browse all Indian AI characters.
There is no language menu to change. Write in Hindi in Devanagari, in Hinglish typed in Roman script, or in English, and the character replies the same way — switching mid-sentence works too. Even the small actions characters describe between asterisks are written in Hinglish, so a scene reads as desi rather than translated. More on this on the Hindi AI chat page.
Beyond Hindi, a regional roster has characters who each speak a different Indian language, including Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Assamese and Bhojpuri.
In the Android app you can call a character and talk in Hindi or Hinglish. Calls are paid for with minute packs priced in rupees, and there are no free minutes. Calling is not available on the website or on iPhone. How Hindi AI voice calls work.
Separate from ordinary chats, Roleplay has ready-made scenes with a setting and a character already in it. You can browse every scene on the website, and play them in the Android app. A few to start with:

If you mainly chat in English, want a huge range of fan-made characters from films, anime and games, or need an iPhone app, Character.AI covers that ground and Desi Avtar does not try to. Desi Avtar makes most sense when you want Indian characters and conversations in Hindi or Hinglish.
Every Desi Avtar character is fictional and every reply is AI-generated. Desi Avtar is for adults (18+).
