CHAI is a mobile app for chatting with a very large collection of AI characters. If you are looking at alternatives, it helps to know exactly how another service works before you move over. Desi Avtar is character chat built around Indian characters, and its text chat runs in any browser — nothing to install. Here is how it compares and how its free use works.
Desi Avtar’s text chat works in Chrome, Safari or any modern browser, on a phone or a computer. You open a character’s page and start typing — no download, and no account needed to begin. That makes it easy to try a few characters before deciding whether it is for you.
The Android app is there if you want more: it adds voice calls and lets you play Roleplay scenes. There is no iPhone app, so on iPhone you use the website.
Picking up where you left off
Moving from an app to the web changes a few habits, so it helps to know how conversations are kept:
Each character’s chat is saved in your browser, so reopening their page on the same device brings the conversation back.
Chats do not sync between devices. A conversation on your laptop will not appear on your phone.
Clearing your browser data clears the chats too. You can also clear one conversation yourself and start fresh.
Characters respond to the most recent part of a chat, so for a long-running story, recap the important bits now and then.
How free use works on Desi Avtar
It is better to know this upfront than to find out mid-conversation. Free text chat is supported by ads rather than by a fixed daily message count:
On the website, you are asked to watch a short video ad at a couple of points in a conversation, and some pages show display ads.
In the Android app, free use shows an ad every few messages and when you open a character.
An optional premium plan, priced in rupees, removes ads. Voice-call minutes are sold separately and are not part of the plan.
The characters
Desi Avtar’s roster is Indian and hand-written rather than user-generated. You will find friends and dost characters, family figures, teachers, spiritual guides, historical figures, romantic companions and regional-language characters. Every one replies in Hindi, Hinglish or English — whichever you use. Browse them all on the Indian AI characters directory, or start with a few of these:
If you use character apps for stories, there are two ways to do it here. Any character will stay in role in an ordinary chat, and you can set a scene yourself. Or open Roleplay, where each scene comes with a setting and a character already in it — browsable on the website, playable in the Android app.
