There are many ways to talk to AI. Desi Avtar’s is conversation with characters: friends, family figures, teachers, companions and historical figures, each with a personality of their own. You can start in your browser in a few seconds, write in English, Hinglish or Hindi, and call some characters by voice from the Android app.

What was the hardest decision of your life?— To a historical figure — replies are AI portrayals.
Mujhse Hinglish mein baat karo.— To anyone.
When you open a character for the first time, they greet you — usually with a namaste and their name — and wait for you. From there it is an ordinary chat window: you type, they reply in character. Characters sometimes describe small actions between asterisks, shown in a lighter style so you can tell them apart from what they say.
Come back later on the same browser and the conversation is still there. If a chat has gone somewhere you do not like, you can clear it and start again from the greeting — each character’s conversation is kept separately, so clearing one does not touch the others.
Desi Avtar is made for conversation with characters. Its characters stay in role, speak with opinions and are written to be good company — which is exactly what you do not want for writing an essay, debugging code or researching something factual. For those, a general-purpose AI assistant is the better tool. And for health, money or legal decisions, talk to a qualified person.
