Janitor AI is a website for chatting and roleplaying with user-made characters, where you can use its own model or connect another one through API settings. Desi Avtar is a different kind of service: a curated cast of Indian characters, with the AI already running on Desi Avtar’s servers — nothing to configure. One thing to be clear about first: Desi Avtar is not an unfiltered platform.

Desi Avtar is character chat and roleplay for adults, focused on conversation, humour, friendship and light romance. Its companion characters are written to keep romance non-graphic: they respond to flirting with teasing, shyness or a playful boundary rather than explicit content. If explicit roleplay is what you are after, this is not the place for it, and it is better to know that now.
If what you want is good characters, story-driven roleplay and an easy start, read on.
Some platforms let you bring your own model by pasting in an API key or setting up a proxy. That gives technical users control, but it is also a hurdle. On Desi Avtar there is nothing to set up: open a character and start typing. The replies come from Desi Avtar’s own servers, and you do not need an account to begin chatting on the website.
Every character stays in role. Describe an action between asterisks — *darwaza khol kar andar aata hai* — and set the scene yourself. Characters describe their own actions the same way, in Hinglish. The AI roleplay chat guide has tips for writing scenes that go somewhere.
The Roleplay section has scenes with a setting and a character already in it — you can browse all of them on the website and play them in the Android app. For roleplay in Hindi specifically, see Hindi AI roleplay.
Instead of a feed of user uploads, Desi Avtar has a hand-written roster of Indian characters, each with a personality and backstory. The full list is on the Indian AI characters directory; a few that work well for story chats:
